1. Dr. Gencheff views the patient's input as a very integral part of the surgery. Therefore, at this
time, the surgical plan previously discussed at the initial, complimentary consultation is reviewed.
2. The patient is given a mild sedative and escorted to the surgical suite.
3. After the scalp is thoroughly cleansed, hair in the donor area is taped up allowing access to the selected
area of hair bearing donor scalp. Using buffered-lidocaine local anesthetic, the scalp is anesthetized (numbed).
The unique combination of the sedative and local anesthetic makes the procedure extremely comfortable.
4. Once the scalp is anesthetized, the donor strip is removed. The strip measures approximately 0.5 cm to
1 cm in width and 15 cm to 22 cm in length.
5. The donor strip is then placed in a cooling device. While the strip is being cooled, the space left by the
removal of the donor skin is sutured closed by pulling the skin edges together and sewing them with a very
fine ethilon suture. The sutured area is concealed by the hair that was taped up. These stitches are removed
in 10 to 14 days. Dr. Gencheff, from personal experience, feels patient satisfaction is better using
non-absorbable suture rather than absorbable sutures and/or staples.
6. The donor strip is then prepared into hundreds of follicular units being 1-, 2- and/or 3- haired graffs.
Dr. Gencheff personally prepares the grafts. Over the years, this has proven to give consistent results.
While Dr. Gencheff is personally preparing the donor strip, the patient is relaxing watching television.
7. Once the grafts have been prepared, the recipient area is anesthetized again using the local anesthetic.
With state-of-the-art surgical instrumentation, slits and/or needle holes are made in the recipient for
insertion of the follicular units. Dr. Gencheff feels using a variety of grafts of different sizes and shapes
gives a softer, natural look rather than a delineated or line pattern. Dr. Gencheff's experience is that this
surgical program affords a much quicker, fuller and more natural look.
8. Once all the grafts have been placed, the area is again cleansed and a moist dressing is applied. (For
smaller cases, the bandage may not be applied.) Dr. Gencheff finds that using a moist dressing affords
a faster recovery with a more aesthetic look with less scabbing, redness and a quicker recovery. If the
bandage is applied, it is removed the morning after surgery.
The follicular units can begin to grow hair as early as six to eight weeks after surgery. Depending on
the surgical schedule as discussed at the consultation. the second session can be done as early as four
to six weeks from the first or as late as four to six months or more.
All surgical programs are customized to each individual patient, taking into account their hair needs now and in
the future. "Hair restoration is like a game of chess, you are always thinking of the third and fourth move, not
just what you need to do now."
